Amazon is reportedly working on a new smartphone, more than ten years after it stopped selling the Fire Phone. According to a Reuters report from today, four anonymous sources with knowledge of the project have revealed this development. The device currently carries the internal codename Transformer, though specifics about its pricing, Amazon’s investment to date, or projected revenue remain unconfirmed. As with any product still in the conceptual or development phase, there is no guarantee that Amazon will actually bring this phone to market. The sources indicated that financial considerations or shifts in corporate strategy could lead to the cancellation of the Transformer project. When contacted for a statement, an Amazon representative declined to comment on the Reuters article.
Initially, Amazon explored the possibility of creating a basic feature phone, but the company has since pivoted to focus on a smartphone that integrates deeply with its proprietary services. One potential approach involves using Alexa as the operating system for the device, although Reuters’ sources noted that this is not yet finalized and did not provide further details on how such a system would function. The development team aims to design the phone to facilitate seamless shopping through Amazon and partner platforms like Grubhub, as well as to enable easy streaming of content from Prime Video and Prime Music.
